Objective: The goal of this project is for your team to create the rules and attributes of your own vampire universe. While creativity is necessary, research is actually the focal point. The caveat is that your vampire universe must be based on research your team completes about stories associated with vampires from any point in time, history, folklore, or fiction.

Vampire’s Ethnicity: Chinese

Justification:

Jiang Shi (stiff corpse) or Hopping Vampires are reanimated corpses that awaken from having restless spirits that come back to haunt other people.

Vampire’s Abilities: Shapeshifting into animals, Empowered by the moonlight

Justification:

Skinwalkers in Native American folklore share many similarities to vampires, such as an aversion to sunlight and hypnotic tendencies. Skinwalkers possess the ability to shapeshift into animals and therefore we are extending this ability to our vampire.

Our vampire becomes stronger, faster, and more durable when he comes into contact with a moon, moonlight, or lunar energy or substance. This possibly unlocking abilities related to the affinity and enhancing their existing powers. Some users may be able to draw sustenance from the moon or even slow or stop aging.

Vampire’s Weakness(es): Extremely dependent on moonlight

Justification:

Our vampire gets a significant speed, strength, and abilities boost throughout the night by absorbing the moonlight. So, therefore, long exposure to the sun in the daytime would significantly weaken the vampire. Additionally, the phases of the moon would also affect our vampire's abilities: full moon phase is generally the best phase for the vampire because it receives 100% moonlight. Despite all this, different mystics with powers to block the moon with clouds or objects hurt our vampire’s power, making the weakness a double-edged sword.

Vampire’s Reproduction: Turns others into vampires through bites

Justification:

Vampires are dead creatures, hence their bodies don’t work the same as they did when they were alive. So, our vampire has the ability to expand its own population through feasting on its prey. The bite would transfer bacteria that would turn others into vampires in a short period of time. Our vampire’s bite would turn male humans to vampires, but not females. When biting a human female, their offspring would possess human and vampire-like traits.

Vampire’s Camouflage: Use of Shapeshifting

Justification:

Due to their unique physical appearances, vampires often conceal themselves by shapeshifting into animals such as bats or wolves. Disguising themselves as animals allow them to move around undetected. The origin of shapeshifting comes from the similarities between bats and vampires including their fangs, nocturnal activities, and source of vampirism spreading. Hence, many people believed that bats were animal forms of vampires. It was also believed that the process of transformation was painful and infrequent. The transformations from human form to bat form and vice versa often requires a lot of blood and food which makes it unsustainable for them to keep transforming.

Vampire’s Home: Dark caves or Dark houses

Justification:

Due to our vampire's necessity of the moon, our vampire strikes only at night and rests within dark places during the day. Our vampire enjoys the company of a poorly lit house with minimal lighting. Their bedroom will usually be the coldest and darkest room in the house. This makes the best possible living situation for our vampire. Because there is minimal lighting, electronics that are around a real vampire such as watches, computers, mps3 players, cellphones, and other electronics throughout the house tend to malfunction in really odd ways.

Vampire’s Preferences: Seduction before the feast, Buying blood

Justification:

Vampires are extremely sexual beings and it is much easier to feed on someone who is unaware rather than someone who is always speculating. Therefore our vampire finds enjoyment in feeding on the bodies of their lovers. It is easier to kill someone that has fallen under our vampire’s good looks and affection, seducing their prey before feeding.

Additionally, because vampires can generally obtain much of anything they want, it is extremely easy for them to obtain money and practically buy blood. Many blood drinkers will advertise for blood donors, whereas others will purchase from blood banks. Although this is the easy way out, when the bloodlust becomes unbearable this could be a way to relinquish the rooted issues.

In today’s lesson, we questioned our reality and how truth can be manipulated. Our Aim was: How does Orwell craft the theme of “manipulation of truth” in 1984?

We began the lesson with a Do Now in which we discussed what we believed the definition of truth to be. Some responses included:

• something objectively correct
• something that can be backed by facts
• anything that is backed up by facts and evidence
• authenticity; facts
• holds different meanings for different people
• the factual progression of events as seen from an outside, objective point of view 

We then spoke about "fake news" and if it was a problem in society. The class concluded that "fake news" was deliberately fabricated to be false and inaccurate. "Fake news", we then concluded, was a societal problem because it manipulates the truth so that people can't differentiate between what's real and not real. 

This quote is said by O'brian in part three chapter two. Our class discusses that he is really saying only what the party creates is true and immortally true; they don’t make mistakes. This, thus, makes us question the reality that we live in. The excerpt seems to represent Orwell's didactic literature, as it makes us question our reality; how are we sure that what we know is the truth. This quote goes to show that we aren't sure, and that truth itself is a paradox. 

We also discussed how truth has ELEVEN definitions, yet each definition contained the word "true" in it; adding on to how the word truth is a paradox in itself. Who defines what the truth is? Those who disagree with the vast majority of what we believe to be true are known as outliers, and seen as outcasts, just as Winston was in the novel. 

Some symbols discussed in class today were:

• the glass paperweight 
• the glass paperweight represents the pasts and greatly aids in the development of Winston's character. the small piece of coral in the center of it represents the fragile nature of human relationships, in this case between Winston and Julia, which is destroyed by O'Brian. It is ultimately, a symbol for Winston's attempts to discover the past 
• the picture of St. Clement's Church
• the picture of Saint Clement's church also represents the past. However, it also foreshadows the future. The song Winston associates with the picture ends with "Here comes the chopper to chop off your head!," alluding to the ultimate capture of Winston by the thought police and the brainwashing and manipulation of him by O'Brian. 
• the red-armed prole
• the red-armed prole woman represents the hope invoked in Winston for the future. He hopes that one day the proles will rebel against and overthrow the party. She also represents reproductive capacity, as he envisions her giving birth to the future generations of proles that will uproot the Party

After going over the symbols in the book, we had a whole class discussion in which we asked questions we were still confused on. Some included: 

1. When Winston says "They already got me" does this indicate he has previously had rebellious thoughts and has been brainwashed by the party?

Yes, we can infer that O'Brian has posed a danger to the party from this line, but the Party has now manipulated him and altered his reality so that he lives to serve them. 

2. Was the use of the antique store specifically meant to identify people who may pose a threat to the party?

Yes, the antique store goes directly against the ideals of the party, as it contains items    from the past, giving hints as to what the past may have been like. Therefore, the only people likely to go into the antique store are those that may pose a threat to the party. 

"Build Your Own Vampire" Project: Period 5, Team Deadicated™

Vampire's Ethnicity: (Sam)
- Filipino

Justification: In Filipino culture, there exists a monster called the “aswang”: it is similar to a vampire in that they drink human blood (and liver and unborn babies) and are repelled by items usually considered to be effective against vampires. According to The Aswang Project, some scholars believe that when the Spanish were colonizing the Philippines, the colonizers demonized the natives who continued practicing their pagan beliefs; those who were ostracized secluded themselves from the rest of society in the mountains and became the origin for the legend of the aswang (The Aswang Project, 2015).

Our vampire’s name is Malaya. She wanted to continue her traditional beliefs and the Spanish were destroying her village so she followed an old, magical ritual to become an aswang and strike back against them. She tied a fertilized chicken egg to her stomach, and once the chick passes into her flesh, she buried the shell in a bamboo tube with coconut oil and chicken feces (Nelson, 2018). She then become an Aswang: a helpful woman, though a bit tired looking, in the day, but a vengeful monster at night who feasted on her enemies. Since she transformed in the 17th century, though, she’s become a more confident and outgoing person, no longer afraid of losing what she holds dear, and happy to see her country moving away from its imperialist history.

Vampire’s Abilities: (Tina)

- Have the ability to transform their appearance (shape shift) and the appearance of other objects.

- A dying Aswang can pass their powers on to somebody else.

Justification: During the day, our vampire uses her shape shifting abilities to appear as a regular townsperson (particularly a woman, as mentioned in the previous section). By doing this, she is able to blend in with her victims while observing who to target next. Once night starts creeping in, our vampire shifts into her predatory form which is obviously better suited for hunting. There is never a consistent image or description of what she looks like. Some reports of sightings talked of a man-sized bird, a Tasmanian devil, pigs, and dogs, but she prefers to take the form of a large bird, as she loves to soar over the island at night. It’s also a very effective form to hunt in as well.

Our vampire possesses the ability to transform the appearance of other objects, as well. This becomes quite convenient when she wants to create a doppelganger of one of her victims, in order to hide the evidence of her feeding habits from locals. However, despite her careful precautions, she always has to be on the move in case the villagers get suspicious about the missing people or they realize she isn’t aging.  

Lastly, when our vampire is dying, she can choose to pass her magical powers on to someone else. All she would have to do is hold her mouth close to a chosen person. Then the chick that helped her originally become an aswang would hop into the mouth of said chosen person. She’s still looking for the right, willing person to pass her powers on to, as she views becoming an aswang a choice, especially with the hardships that come with it, despite the pretty awesome abilities.

Vampire's Weakness(es): (John)

- Religious artifacts, such as holy water, rosary, and prayers. Also weak to intense heat and light.

Justification: During the time that our vampire transformed, Spanish colonizers were doing their best to convert Filipino natives to Christianity. As an incentive, Christian prayers and artifacts were said to be able to ward off monsters such as our vampire. Since the ritual Malaya took part in was pagan in origin, and Christianity is by nature strongly opposite to pagan values, she cannot touch any religious artifacts or partake in Christian activities like praying. She can pretend to of course: she had a human hang a cross in her house to prove to her neighbors she wasn’t in league with Satan and she can attend church, though it does make her uncomfortable and she can’t receive the Eucharist. She pretends to pray in the pew. She is not weak to the sun, but can be burned by incredibly powerful lights, especially light created by fire, if the energy is directed at her. Also, the person must know she is an Aswang, otherwise she will not be harmed.

- Marrying other human beings, “marking humans”, transferring power

Justification: When our vampire transformed herself in a ritual (mentioned above), she resigned herself to a life of loneliness. She could reproduce by either marrying a human or passing on her powers onto a willing recipient by letting the chick that passed through her flesh leave her body and go through a mouth of a human. She highly doubted the first one would ever happen without deception, and if she did the second one, she would die soon after. However, after almost a century of preying on colonizers and other unfortunate souls that displeased her, she met a human man in her mortal form. He began to court her, and she fell in love with him, though she was constantly afraid that once he found out the truth, he would leave her and hate her. One day, she was forced to tell him the truth once he proposed to her, unwilling to go through with a wedding when the end result would be him transforming against his will. Instead of him fleeing as soon as possible, he was silent for a moment, before professing that he didn’t care, and that he was willing to become an aswang to be with her. They married quickly, and are very happy together, though they have to hunt separately as they dislike sharing food. They both agreed to not have children as they don’t want to force a living being to live a life they didn’t choose. Now, they constantly move around the island, occasionally traveling the world together, both unwilling to leave the world before the other had found a willing recipient of their powers.

Vampire's Camouflage (How vampires live with humans without being detected): (Ben)

Justification: In Filipino culture, vampires are known as “The Danag Spirits” and they look very similar to humans, and once helped them by planting taro and clearing fields for them. They were “gods” to humans on earth. Vampires in the Philippines are also considered to be typically beautiful females during the day, but fiends for humans at night. This is why during the day, our vampire can inconspicuously live among humans, though she is much weaker then and appears very tired. Our vampire can act as human as any normal person can, and during the day, she might as well be fully human. Unless somebody saw her at night, then she would be completely undetectable during the day.

Vampire's Home: (Sam)

- A small town in the province of Capiz.

Justification: Historically, the province of Capiz is known as “aswang country”, possibly due to the fact that a genetic disorder called “X-Linked Dystonia Parkinsonism” was found to come from the Capiz province 63% of the time. Many with the disorder would suffer from “body twisting, tongue protruding from their mouth, and salivating”, so other members of society thought them to be “transforming” into a monsterous state of the aswang. Thus, our “vampire” lives inconspicuously in a small town with her husband, helping out her neighbors and friends, transforming at night with none the wiser, though frequently having to move around to avoid suspicion. Despite the opportunity to move out of the Philippines, our vampire continues to stay in the area. She became an aswang to defend her country, or at least rebel the only way she could against the colonizers. She feels tied there: she was born there (twice), and she’ll die there.

Vampire's Preferences: (Kajini)
- Small children, fetuses, corpses, human blood and livers. Prefer not to feed on those who are close to them. Will feed on those who have wronged her, or wronged others close to her.

Justification:  Aswangs behave like ghouls when hunting. They feast on corpses but they mostly prefer eating unborn fetuses and small children, more specifically sick children. They relish the taste of their blood, livers, and hearts. Some stories say that an aswang has a long, tube-like nose that they can use to suck out a fetus from a sleeping mother’s womb. However, despite these monstrous descriptions, Aswangs feel everything a human feels: happiness, anger, sadness. It is easy for them to develop friendships with humans around them. Due to this bond, they prefer not to feed on those they develop friendships with, and sometimes even offer healing potions and helpful spells to their neighbors. Our vampire dislikes feeding on fetuses, and goes out of her way to feed on the blood of people she views as “bad”, which used to be colonizers and now  applies to criminals and generally unpleasant people. However, because of this, she considers her judgements on people final, and views herself as punishing the wicked, even though there are times she feeds on people in spite, even if they aren’t bad, and excuses her actions.

Aim: How does the Party maintain control according to The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism?

Do Now: Why did Winston fall asleep thinking "Sanity is not statistical"? Why does this quote mean and what is significance?

During the group discussion interesting points were brought up. Many groups discussed how this quote possibly meant that what the majority believes is not necessarily what's sane. That how sometimes the correct way of thinking is considered insane by the general population. The example that was brought up was Galileo who, among the general religious people was considered insane for believing that the Earth revolved around the Sun and not the other way around.

We later took a more in dept look into Oceanian society. The hierarchy, as discussed in the novel, is Big Brother on top, followed by the Inner Party, then the Outer Party, and finally the majority of the population the Proles. Citizens that are born into the Inner or Outer Party will remain there with some change in class due to intelligence. Citizens born into the Proles will remain a Prole for their life. Any Prole that demonstrates an ounce of intelligence is killed immediately. This is to steer away any possibility of rebellion among the loosely regulated proles Though not nearly as violent, this rigid class structure reflects the one in America in a sense. Most often people, whether it be fortunately or unfortunately, remain in the same social class that they were born into.

From there we got to how else the party directly controls its people. Doublethink, crimestop, and blackwhite were all methods used by the party to control the masses.

Doublethink involves making one accept two contradicting statements as true to create confusion. The most famous examples of this is paradoxes. The God Paradox and the Grandfather Paradox are two examples of this. Next is crimestop were is stopping a thought right in its tracks repetitively until it becomes instinct. Its psychological conditioning, akin to methods used to train animals. Blackwhite is simply accepting whatever information is told to you, without question. It's these methods that brainwashed the people into compliance in the novel.

Witcher

The witcher book and game series is set in a fantasy world with many mythical

creatures including vampires. These vampires have the ability to suck blood if they

want, though it is not required and is rather used for pleasure. They are also able to
convince normal human beings to do things for them. Compared to average humans

they are much faster and stronger. In the series it is shown that they can only be

killedby other vampires and any other damage will be regenerated. They can also

gain claws when aggravated or looking to kill, going further they can turn into a batlike

creature for greater combat ability.

Vampire’s Weaknesses: Afraid of Sticky Rice

Justification:

In the movie, Mr. Vampire, vampires are not like the traditional western vampires that

of the vampires are afraid of sticky rice because of its natural medicinal nature. It’s

similar to garlic in the sense that it thwarts vampires, but different because sticky rice

does not actually hurt them whatsoever.

Vampire’s Reproduction: Can sexually reproduce with humans

Justification:

In the Twilight Saga, Edward was able to impregnate Bella when she was still human.
However, the human body isn’t able to support the needs of a vampire. The human

host of the baby vampire will either die at the birth of the child, or can be turned into
a vampire before then to survive the process. In either situations, the child vampire is

born and it is the central way vampires in this universe can reproduce and expand.

Vampire’s Camouflage:guile, trickery, unassuming disguise

Justification: nure ona, the japanese folklore version of vampire would disguise herself

as a woman holding a child. Travelers who held the child would be trapped under the

Justification

Many Australians believed in a living vampire known as the Talamaur, who could communicate with spirits and either make them its servants or eat them. This led to some people claiming to be Talamaur, and eating corpses the night after the person had died.

Justification

According to some North American mythology, the “Sukuyan” vampire possessed this very ability. This could prove a very deadly trait as our vampire may remain unsuspecting during the day, and well- it's kind of hard to stop/foresee a ball of literal light.

Vampire's Weakness(es) (Sharon)

Vampires are allergic to garlic (alliumphobia).

Justification

Garlic is believed to be the most common form to repel vampires, even seen in ‘Interview with the Vampire’ when the villagers hang garlic to ward off vampires. Today, modern scientists are known to be an effective antibiotic, historically used to kill off bacterial infections. Previously however, it was seen as a form of protection- ancient Egyptians viewing it as a gift from god, Roman soldiers seeing it as a token of courage, sailors seeing it as a protecting charm against shipwreck, and German miners using it to protect from underground evil spirits. In China and Malaysia, the foreheads of people would have garlic smeared on it as a method to protect children from vampires. In Romania, garlic was part of their daily diet as well as put on windows, doors, and horns of cattle all to prevent vampires from entering their spaces. Vampires are created through infection of blood, and thus with garlic, it would only cure the disease of vampirism.

Vampire's Reproduction (Kazi)

Vampires cannot reproduce between each other, but it is possible for a male vampire to produce an offspring with a human female.

Justification

A majority of the folklore on vampire reproduction originates from the Balkan region, where vampire descendents are referenced as vampire and human parents. This is due to vampire bodies functioning differently from humans. Giving birth for humans function to expand their population, while vampires convert humans through their blood to expand their population. Thus, it does not make sense for vampires to be capable of having offspring. Though, there have been multiple references of male vampires able to have children through a human, as the human carries the child. This can lead to different beliefs of the child being completely a vampire or some form of a hybrid.

He/She can shapeshift into a bat and a wolf.

Justification

Bram Stoker’s Dracula cemented the idea of a vampire’s ability to shapeshift into a bat/wolf. However, this trait stretches further into the past with mentions of such an ability present as far back as select Hindu folktales; the association mentioned to exist for centuries or longer even before that.

Vampire's Home (Zoraiz)

The vampire resides throughout populated cities in Europe, and prefers to stay in the dark and shadows as often as possible. Furthermore, when it comes time for the vampire to sleep, the vampire’s primary choice for its bed is a coffin.

Justification

The reason for the vampire to stay in European areas is because this is where the first vampires originated, and is home to the most vampires. It prefers to stay in densely populated areas for two major reasons, one is because it obviously provides a good source of food for the vampire to feed on, and secondly, a more densely populated area is much easier to blend into and stay undetected. The vampire prefers a coffin as its bed for the reason that it tends to be fully enclosed and not let any light in, as well as the fact that it is said to maintain the vampires powers and immortality.

Vampire's Preference (Ahmed)

Wild orgies with the living/destruction & torment/oranges or plums

Justification

(Based off of the vampire NOSFERATU) (Romanian vampire)

As we all know, vampires can’t mate with other vampires however male vampires can mate with female vampires and even father children with them.

The Romanian vampire was also known to start a life of destruction and torment as soon as it’s burial was over. The vampire gets stronger with every attack which enables it to obviously cause more destruction with every attack. Also the vampire was the reason for then widespread of “plague and illnesses among villages” so that’s an addition to the torment.

It was believed that placing lemons or lemon juice around the house would protect you and your family from the Neuntoters because of how much they despised lemons. It was also believed that placing lemon in a dead person's mouth, who people believe will grow to become a vampire, will protect the village from that vampire. Opposite of lemons are either plums or oranges?
