Modern Mythology 2020

The world has been pretty crazy these last few weeks. Since the coronavirus presented itself as a real threat, infecting thousands of people in the US, the community around us has fundamentally changed. I see far less people moving throughout the streets (as it should be). There’s this aura of fear surrounding the world and the news has seemingly been about nothing but minute-by-minute coverage of the virus. Everything just feels so surreal.

Working from home has been both a treat and a catastrophe. I’m just not as focused as I would be when I’m in school and the only thing I can do is my work. There are so many distractions in our lives right now that make it extremely difficult to keep focused on our studies. Even if the hysteria hasn’t gotten to you and you isolate yourself from distractions, being at home always means there’s something else to do right around the corner. Luckily, I feel that my school has done good by us to segment the school days into these smaller fragments and allow us to submit any time within the day or sometimes week.

For the world as a whole, things seem to just get worse and worse each day. As of March 25, the number of people who have died from COVID-19 has almost surpassed 1,000. I get differing numbers everywhere I look. According to medical experts, the spread of the virus is accelerating, and the numbers back it up. Last I checked, over 20,000 have been infected from the virus, and I know that the amount will increase dangerously as time passes. There have been talks of a possible national lockdown, although President Trump has talked of easing up on the lockdowns we’ve already implemented. The medical system is also extremely strained, and reagents to create tests are in short supply, unfortunately. It seems like it’s been nothing but bad news as of late, but I’m hopeful that this nightmare can end soon enough.

I personally feel that a lot of people are a bit too scared for their own health. While the virus certainly is a real threat and is causing many problems right now, there are already steps highlighted by WHO to help keep yourself healthy. We need to isolate to the best of our abilities, and keep ourselves clean by washing our hands thoroughly, not touching your face, etc. I fear there are people who practice too much caution to the point where they possibly send themselves to the hospital to get tested at the slightest hint of a cough or some other imagined symptom, depleting the already scarce resources that we have. If we can follow the guidelines, there should be no reason to catch the virus and we can help flatten the curve, as in spread out the time of the pandemic and have less people infected at one time so as to not strain the medical system.

Remember to follow the guidelines set up by WHO to keep yourself healthy. I have confidence in not only the people of the US but in the whole world. Adam Bougaev signing out.
