Aim: How does the unraveling of the truth create an epiphany and tragic reversal (Peripeteia) for Oedipus?

Do Now: How much do you really know about your family’s background? 

How would you react if you traced enough steps to first learn: 

1. Your real grandfather was Adolf Hitler

• Kyle said that he would try to make the name better
• Paulina said something along the lines of how your ancestor’s actions don’t reflect on your own actions 

2. Your parents were siblings

• I said that I would be shocked at first and then I would confront my parents and finally go to the doctor to get tests done.  

Ms. Fusaro asked what if we were to see it on Instagram, a public feed

• Kyle said that he would first deny it and find out more before he confronts his parents about it 
• Daniel said that he would question it and then ask his parents, but he would still love them and protect them because they are his parents after all
• Relates to Korean culture, each Korean family has a book that is like a family tree but in words. They are also supposed to name their children a specific name and is indicated in the book

Ms. Fusaro asked if anyone had an older or younger sibling that was in the same school.

• Kyle said that his brother was Curtis and that in elementary and middle school, the teachers didn’t really see him differently but rather his brother’s friends. He says that Curtis is his brother and not the other way around. 
• Fusaro also says that she has a younger brother by 3 years and he wasn’t the academic child. The teachers already had an expectation for the younger brother.

Peripeteia refers to the plot twist itself 

Anagnorisis refers to when the character has a turning point 

Ms. Fusaro asks what movie would be similar to where there is an anagnorisis because of all of the movies she mentions we have not watched

• Katrina says the flash, he was fighting another speedster and the future speedster came back in time and he didn’t reveal his identity until the end and it was just him from the future.

Paulina asks why it is called “fight club” Called fight club bc they have a club in a factory and they fight to get their angst out. They fight to the death and use the dead bodies to make soap. 1st rule is to not talk about fight club.

Peripeteia is when the messenger says “Because Polybus was no kin to you in blood”(pg 154).                   

The conversation between the messenger and Oedipus is while Jocasta is still there. Jocasta knows what she knows and it should be obvious who Oedipus actually is. 

By page 157 Jocasta realizes the truth and tries to prevent him from learning the truth because she doesn’t want him to suffer from the knowledge. But Oedipus thinks that the truth of his birth is ruining her pride and that she lowered herself to marry him. He says he is of low birth and it demonstrates his hubris.
