What is it like working from home?

Working from home has been one of the worst things for me during quarantine. Not only is it just hard to stay focused on school work, but maintaining a schedule for doing things has been rough. When we are going to school we are always following a schedule and we adapt to this for homework and other activities. However, being at home it’s very easy to get side tracked and also become very lazy, since there really are no other things to work around. In school it is easier to stay on task while sitting at a desk with the teacher in front of you. Additionally, the workload has been bigger than ever because we are receiving both classwork and homework at the same time. With no forced schedule it is hard to always stay on task and get things done.

What are you learning about your world/community based on the reactions?

I have seen so many different reactions to the virus. There are people who I know that refuse to leave the house or aren’t allowed out of the house for any reason. However, there are people who just don’t take any of the warnings seriously or just act like this is all a hoax and don’t abide by any of the guidelines given by the government. For example, yesterday I took a walk in Clove Lakes Park and there were all responses throughout the park. I saw families biking together with absolutely no masks and without staying 6 feet apart. This is not only dangerous for them for the people around them. Then you also have the people who panic and stock up on as much as possible. Now with the shortage of beef, the panic gets worse and worse by the day as people think they won’t be able to get food in the coming days or weeks. From all of this I learned that not everybody is reliable when needing to work together to put an end to Corona. From seeing people act so carelessly, I lose hope and faith in the people of not only the U.S, but even Staten Island itself.

Your own personal feelings and thoughts about what is happening right now.

Personally I think we are in a very tough situation, but we need to maintain hope. The more negative we think about the situation the worse it’s gonna get. It’s important to follow the guidelines as it’s the only way we will be able to return back to normal the quickest way possible. I never would have imagined we would be in this situation of being quarantined inside for nearly 2 months. However, I have been able to grow stronger in my faith and develop relationships with people I would not have expected. This has given me hope because we are learning so many great things during this time and we will be able to get through this and come out stronger. As much as it hurts knowing that we won’t be able to experience all the things we want with senior year, it’s important we stay strong as we are slowly getting better and better as the days and weeks go on.
