Cindy Liang #16

PD. 8 Modern Mythology 2020
Aim: How does Greek mythological story of creation highlight the troubles between the family structure, the sexes, the struggles for dominance and control, and the child paying for the sins of the parents?

“First there was Chaos, the vast immeasurable abyss, Outrageous as a sea, dark, wasteful, wild.” - John Milton
Question: Observing the diction and mood of Milton’s quote, how does this create perspective on the origins of the universe?

Discussion:
  • Chaos has no beginning and no end (Gabriella)

  • The words “vast, immeasurable, abyss” gives a very bad connotation: It makes you feel like you are lost, with no sense of direction (Ryan)

  • Ryan also brought up that the second part (outrageous as a sea, dark, wasteful) makes you actually picture a world where it is all dark and mysterious

  • We started discussing about how blind people viewed the world.

  • Ms. Fusaro asked us what we think the color of nothing is. Some people said white. Some people said black. Nothing has no color.

After the do now, we read an article about the big bang theory and had to compare it to the origins of the universe.

  • We still don’t know how the origins of the universe actually came to be.

  • We’re basing everything off of what we know but we don’t know anything

  • Josh related it to religion and explained how everyone wanted to spread their own religions and ideas to people across the country. That way, everyone will be following the same rules.
  • At the end of the discussion, Ms. Fusaro added that the big bang theory is now considered science. But a thousand years from now, it will be called mythology. What makes it so different from greek mythology? Mankind try to answer questions together but end up arguing about them - shows how idiotic that is

From this lesson I learned that we might think we know a lot about something but we aren’t even at the origin. We call the big bang theory science and explain how the universe was formed but there are so many thoughts that we leave out. There is no way to prove that the Big bang Theory is actually how the universe was formed. We learned this because it tells us more about ourselves. This shows that human needs to settle the unknown. They can’t stand the feeling of nothingness and they always want to use science to “explain it.” I also learned that with the help of time, science is just modern mythology. After thousands of years, it will just be considered as a myth that people believe in. It can be applied outside of class because there are many other examples where humans are curious what a phenomenon happened.
