Aim: How does William Golding draw on human nature and the Bible to create complex themes as depicted in Chapter 8 of Lord of the Flies?

“There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast... Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill... You knew didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m the reason its no go? Why things are the way we are?”

  1. With your groups, do a Close Reading of this quote from Chapter 8. 
  2. Annotate important /distinct diction. How does the author manipulate the language?
  3. What is the tone? The mood?
  4. Your group finds this passage absolutely _______ because it illuminates ________ about the boys on the island, thus demonstrating that the human condition _______.

The groups did direct reading of Chapter 8 and analyzed the quote, drawing ideas of symbolism from it. Some examples were: 

1) Mark mentioned that the quote feels creepy and mysterious
2) Caesar found that the speaker seems like an omnipotent being, like a supervillain. 
3) Nor mentioned that the Beast was giving temptations for evil. 
4) Julissa analyzed the repetition in the quote, and said that it creates suspense
5) Shayna mentioned that the scene makes Simon a very relevant character, who was at first at the sidelines. Simon was the only one to speak to the “devil.”
6) Ms. Fusaro says that the quote has many questions and raises questions. 
7) Caesar mentions that the devil is questioning if it is the kids themselves to cause a war, not him. 
8) Shayna adds that Simon is talking to himself, which means he understands a lot more. He personifies the pig, and it brings his consciousness. 
9) Ms. Fusaro concludes that Simon is talking to himself, realizing that what they are doing is wrong. 
10) Michelle adds that Jack uses the beast as a manipulative tool. 
11) Shayna adds that Jack uses the Beast as a tool for manipulation, but Ralph uses the Beast as a preparation for survival. 

12) Ms. Fusaro adds that Ralph enjoyed doing the bad things to Robert. 

13) Nour says that the quote says that the beast is connected to all the kids. 

14) Shayna says that the quote leads to the next chapter. 

15) Julie says that the quote means that something is coming very close. 


Then the groups focused on question 4 saying that:
  1. Caesar says that their group found the passage mysterious, demonstrating the human condition of competition. 
  1. Julia says their group is enlightening demonstrating the condition of savagery.
