Aim: How did the universe begin? What are we made of? How did it begin? Are we alone?
Today was not a typical instructional day. Dr. Davis came in and gave the class a presentation on the scientific aspects on what is life and how it came to be.
He started off by stating that : the Big Bang Theory created the universe, we are made of organic molecules, and life began based off on auto catalytic sets and Natural selection. Obviously, these statements can't be proven by the eye, so scientists relied on archaeology and astronomy to look at the history and the future of life. He then went on to talk about the ancient universe and how science continued to improve it. We then watched an interactive video which was a zoom in and zoom out of earth onto the farthest thing we can see in the universe. Through this video, we learned that the dark matter prevents us from seeing in certain directions and that we only have access to two directions.
The Big Bang Theory was proposed by Sir Fred Hoyle, an english astronomer. Originally, the Big Bang Theory was known as the Steady State Theory. This was the theory of nucleosynthesis. This explained the expansion of the Universe, the presence of Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation, the various abundances of elements and the evolution of stars and galaxies.
When it came to detecting the earliest signs of life, scientists decided to look for the earliest sign of water, which is quite fascinating and it makes sense since organisms do rely on water to live.
Reflection
One thing in class that Dr. Davis said that really stuck was "there is a possibility that any one of you guys sitting in the classroom can create something that would allow us to see further than what we can see right now." It shows me that research about life is always developing. We are constantly evolving whether it technology or even ourselves. Through this presentation, I also learned that dark matter allows us to only see two perspectives, as shown in the video. Before that, I thought it was only because we didn't have the technology. One question in the aim that Dr. Davis did not answer for us is "Are we alone?." To be honest, I don't think we are. I believe that there is some other type of life out there, more alien rather than human. This just goes to show that we humans don't know whats going to happen in the future, just like how we can't really confirm everything that happened in the past, since we didn't see it. This also shows why people tend to question and have doubt about how the universe came to be. People always go back and forth between religion and science and try to find n understanding.
