Modern Mythology 2020
Kayla Wong #16
Period 1

Aim: How does Greek mythological story of creation highlight the troubles between the family structure, the sexes, the struggles for dominance and control, and the child paying for the sins of the parents?

The class for today was a combined class with Ms. Peterson’s class.

“First there was Chaos, the vast immeasurable abyss, Outrageous as a sea, dark, wasteful, wild.” - John Milton
  • The concept of chaos is something that the Greeks weren’t able to comprehend
    • Chaos meant nothing
  • The best way to describe chaos would be “the vast immeasurable abyss” (Ms. Fusaro)
  • Connected to how the Greeks valued balance (Lillian)
  • Before order, there has to be disorder
  • There were no natural laws at the beginning, monsters were unrestrained

Group Discussion:
Thousands of years later, what does the Big Bang theory have in common with the greek creation story?
  • The universe is so big and continues to expand at a rate that we can’t actually comprehend how big just like how the Greeks viewed chaos as the beginning, they also couldn’t comprehend chaos (Kayla)
  • In both, the universe started with nothing and from nothing all these things erupted
Similarity to origins philosophy:
  • The actual origins of the universe are still unknown
  • We can only explain the origins based off of what we can actually comprehend
  • Shows how humans have always been curious about our origins
Questions?
  • What came before the single primordial atom that was the beginning of the universe? (Katrina)

Student Reflection:
We learned about the theories of the origins of the universe scientifically and mythologically. The lesson today demonstrated that there have been theories that tried to explain how the universe came about and how humans were created. However, till this day, there is no exact answer to how the universe was created. The theories that have been created, can only stay as theories as there is no actual way to prove how the universe was created. In addition, there are also some similarities between the scientific explanation and the mythological explanation. Both explanations demonstrate that humans have always been curious about the origins since the beginning of time and that the creation of the universe isn’t something we can fully understand. The Greeks made their explanation thousands of years ago, but the Big Banf Theory was created only 100 years ago. The time difference between them are drastically large, yet there are still similarities between the explanations. The lesson today can be easily applied outside of the classroom because humans in general are always curious about everything. It is common to see people wonder about their own origins and would take a DNA test to see what their ethnicity is. However, often times the results may shock them. They may believe that they are fully on ethnicity, but according to the results they have a small percentage of an ethnicity that they couldn’t have ever imagined. Like the Greeks and scientists, there is no exact explanation as to why it is like this. In the real world, there will be times when our curiosity can definitely get the best of me, but there won’t always be an explanation we can understand. Curiosity is human nature.
