Aim: How does Golding create suspense through the use of short syntax?

Do Now-
1. Lord of Flies Quiz 2. Syntax is the arrangement of the words and phrases to create well formed sentences in language.

Explain how syntax changes the meaning: 1. Let’s eat, Grandma! 2. Let’s eat Grandma Sometimes commas can save lives!!!! Toilet Only For Elderly Disabled Pregnant Children What is Suspense? Suspense: a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. Whole group Discussion Why would an author want to create suspense in writing? It’s a certain feeling of being alive and we crave that feeling. Annotating Short Syntax Page 164 on the PDF Think-Pair-Share - Annotate the short syntax - How do these sentences create a suspenseful effect? These sentences are short with a lot of things happening. Weapons are being used and the kids don’t even realize what they are exactly doing. Behind this painful scene, there is a connotation of rape. There are certain phrases that make us realize how sick this scene really is.

My reflection: Today I learned about the importance of the syntax in a story or writing piece. We looked at a section in "Lord of The Flies" and really dug up its meaning. I learned it so I can really understand the underlying message the author is trying to send to us the readers. Sometimes the messages make a lot of sense if we can just piece together everything. For instance, examining the pages in the book today, we figured out that William Golding (author of Lord of The Flies) was really trying to get at the idea of rape through the unassuming actions of young kids. I will use what I learned today in the future with other books. Sometimes finding the true intentions of the author can be very hard, yet important.
