10/3/19

Aim: How do the images of the Greco-Roman gods/goddesses enlighten modern philosophy?

Do Now: Take the following qualities and list them in order of personal importance:

BRAWN, WISDOM, JUSTICE, VALOR/BRAVERY, PATIENCE, NURTURING, REASON, PURITY, TRUTH, BEAUTY, INNOVATION, CHARITY, LOVE, ATHLETICISM, CUNNING, CONFIDENCE, MERCY

Looking at your list, and the antonyms appearing as a juxtaposition, do you feel the diction demonstrates who you are and/or who you strive to be compared against what you personally despise?

After ranking these qualities in order of personal importance, we compared our top 5 to those of our group members in order to see how much we shared in common. After having a class discussion on which one of these characteristics we ordered based on personal importance. From this discussion, we discovered that people ranked these characteristics based on different reasoning, some ranked in order of what they want to see in other people, while others ranked in order on what they want to see in themselves and/or improve on. We then worked in pairs to attempt to categorize these characteristics by coming up with nouns that would show the opposite of each one. After doing so, we had a class discussion on the nouns we came up with and discovered that for some words the majority of the class came up with similar nouns, where for others the class disagreed on certain nouns.

WRATH, SLOTH, LUST, PRIDE, GREED, PUTTONY, ENVY - These are known as the 7 deadly sins

Ancient Greek city-states constructed temples and shrines to the gods/goddesses that most influenced their value systems and economy. As you know, Athens is named for Athena (though that is a separate story), Sparta had a temple for Artemis (because despite their focus on military, they were also ancient feminists). Using what you have learned about the gods, which god(s) would your team build a shrine for? Why?

My team decided to build a shrine for Hermes, because he shared a lot of the character traits that my group wanted to have in common, such as intelligence and cunning. He also got along with most of the gods/goddesses.
