How does Edith Hamilton define Mythology?
-myth was created in a time when people had a deep connection with nature and the earth.
-little distinction had been made between the real and unreal.
-mankind believed that it would suffer the wrath of some divinity and the only way to keep the divinity at bay was through sacrifice, pain, and/or suffering.
-the first written record of Greek mythology begins with Homer’s “the Iliad”
-1,000 years before Christ
-the Greeks, unlike the Egyptians, made their gods in their own image.
-mankind became the center of the universe with the Greeks.
-the gods before the Greeks were colossal, intimidating, otherworldly.
-the Greek gods had human-like qualities which included amiability and fury.
-the men who made the myths had an affinity for the rational.
-magic and witchcraft is almost devoid in Greek Mythology, with the exception of Medea and Circe.

What did i learn?
I learned about what really defines mythology and the restrictions of what defines mythology.
Why did i learn this?
This helped me to better understand the mythology background of this class, and what i will be learning this year.
How will i use what i learned?
This background knowledge of Mythology that we learned in class today can be used to develop and further my knowledge of mythology in the future of the class.
